I grew up in the Avalon Park/Calumet Heights community on the south side of Chicago. The community was one known for its political ties with politicians such as Jessie Jackson and John Stroger. One of the things I loved about this community that still holds true today is it is a dry community. That means unlike many of our south side communities this one is not infested with liquor stores. The community is also commuter friendly when going to and from downtown Chicago. The population in this neighborhood is estimated at about 10,000 with a median household income of $43,000.
My family moved into this community in 1970. at the time the cultural population was mixed with African Americans and Caucasians. The climate changed quickly and became prominently African American. This still holds true today but I can see where other cultures are now moving into the community. I venture to say this is a result of gentrification with the proximity and convenience of commuting downtown. This neighborhood is located between Jeffery and Stony Island which are direct feed streets off Lake Shore Drive. The community is also easily accessible via metra, Chicago Skyway and I94.
When visiting this neighborhood check out Chicago Vocational High School. The school opened in 1940 and when World War II began in 1941 was turned over to the United States Navy. the school was then used for military training in aviation mechanics and other national defense vocational occupations. The non vocational class were transferred to Calumet High School now know as the Auburn Gresham campus of Perspectives Charter School. If your want to take a swim or relax in the park Avalon Park on 83rd and Woodlawn is a definite must do with swimming bike and walking trails, tennis courts and a plethora of class including stepping.
While the neighborhood maintains its staple fast food chains such as McDonald's, Popeye's and White Castles it also has choices for other cuisine. On 87th Street you can find jamaican, mexican and vegitarian cuisine.
People in the neighborhood like it for its convenience lower crime spastics and neighborhood schools. It is one of the better manicured neighborhoods on the south side
My family still maintains our childhood home. It is a community that I would recommend visiting and even living.
